5 Paradoxes You Might Experience in Eating Disorder Recovery
Wednesday Nov 01, 2023
Wednesday Nov 01, 2023
A Bite Size episode. Social media can portray eating disorder recovery as a very 'black and white' process, with distinct rights and wrongs. Whereas in fact, recovery is significantly more complex than this and there are plenty of nuances. In this episode, I explore some of the paradoxes in eating disorder recovery looking at food and eating; emotions; finding the right help; short v long game and individual v general experience. I hope that you find it helpful.

Today I’m talking to Erin Washington, host of the wildly popular podcast, Squats & Margaritas. Erin’s upcoming book, From Pain to Purpose: Finding Meaning in The Mess, is a second edition of her previously released book, Squats & Margaritas. In this new edition, Erin details her journey through twenty years of an eating disorder and finding body peace and acceptance at the age of 38 and finding her life’s purpose during the global pandemic.
Squats & Margaritas was written when Erin felt compelled to share a new method of working out that produced proper results. For years, Erin exercised rigorously and deprived herself of many foods and activities. It wasn’t until she found balance that she achieved both physical and mental wellbeing. At the time of releasing the first edition, Erin believed she was writing from her highest form of self. And then the global pandemic hit and her purpose shifted immensely.
Erin was called to start weekly Instagram live conversations early on in the pandemic and was having real conversations with her followers about our daily struggles, including being in lockdown with young children, how hard it was to maintain a workout or a schedule, and much more. These conversations led Erin to her weekly podcast, Squats & Margaritas, conversations to help women feel seen and inspired to find their own purpose.
I’m really looking forward to speaking with Erin today as her story is very relatable to many of you. Erin will be talking about her eating disorder recovery journey and particularly how she changed her relationship with exercise and working out. Erin is going to speak about finding purpose in life and how anyone can do this. Erin has founded the Blue Butterflies Foundation which empowers teenage girls around body image and self-worth issues. She is going to share her best body image tips and some wisdom for mums raising daughters. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

Today I'm speaking with Tessa Peters, CEO and founder of Been There, a charity app dedicated to helping those with body image struggles get paired with a mentor and find the support they need.
Tessa was plagued with body image struggles from her earliest childhood days, into her teens and twenties and also struggling with eating disorders. She felt incredibly alone and misunderstood, and was desperate to find someone removed from friends and family, who she could trust and openly share here struggles with, someone who had been in a similar situation to her. Tessa saw counsellors, dietitians and therapists – but she felt that none of these worked for her fully and they lacked relatability. She recognised that she needed a service like Been There so decided to create this herself. Been There aims to make a positive and powerful difference to people facing body image issues.
During Tessa’s own journey she eventually found a Mentor and still speaks with him today. The value of this relationship and the impact it has had on her life, has been life-saving. Been There’s volunteer Mentors are here to support people through their own journeys and make sure that no one feels alone.
In the episode today, I speak to Tessa about her history of eating disorders and body image issues, and why she felt so passionately about creating Been There. I explore more about the power of mentorship that this incredible charity offers. This episode will help you feel less alone and you may want to think about Been There mentorship yourself if you are struggling. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

Today, I’m talking to Dr. Marianne Miller (all the way from San Diego) who has been in the mental health field for 26 years and has specialised in eating disorders for the last 11 years. Marianne was a full-time academic for 12 years and had a part-time eating disorder practice for much of that time (until she left the university) and went into private practice full-time in 2018.
Dr. Marianne loves working with eating disorders as a therapist and a coach. She takes a non-diet, feminist approach that helps people of all genders live empowered, authentic lives. She embraces the Health at Every Size model and is LGBTQIAA+ affirming. Dr. Marianne recently launched the Inevitable Binge Eating Recovery online program. It helps high-achieving professionals regain their mental and emotional energy by shifting their relationship with food to be fully present in their life.
In this episode today, Marianne explores some of the tools and strategies that she uses in supporting her clients with overcoming binge eating. She talks about the subtle ways that restriction can manifest itself, so triggering binges. Marianne explores mental restriction; how to introduce forbidden foods and more. Marianne is absolutely passionate about this area of work and you are going to learn so much from her. I hope that you enjoy it!
