Psychological and Mindset Shifts in Eating Disorder Recovery (Part 1)
Wednesday Dec 27, 2023
Wednesday Dec 27, 2023
Although eating disorder recovery requires behaviour change and a focus on food, it also requires psychological and mindset work. If this part of recovery is not addressed, you are at risk of being stuck in a quasi-recovered place or simply thinking that 'recovery doesn't work for me'. This is part one of a two-part series on all things psychology and mindset in eating disorder recovery. I hope that you find it helpful.

Shifting Your Negative Self-Talk with Katie Horwitch
Saturday Dec 23, 2023
Saturday Dec 23, 2023
Today I’m talking to Katie Horwitch. Katie is a writer, speaker, mindset coach, and women’s empowerment activist. She is the founder of WANT: Women Against Negative Talk, a platform that gives women tips, tools, motivation, and inspiration to move forward in their lives fearlessly, by shifting their negative self-talk patterns. She is also the host of WANTcast: The Women Against Negative Talk Podcast (currently in its eighth year).
Katie’s new book- Want Your Self, Katie offers a new approach to help you shift your negative self-talk patterns in a real, lasting way that goes beyond just “speaking nicely to yourself.” Because self-talk isn’t positive or negative it’s the story you are telling yourself, so you have to start there.
This wise, compassionate, and pragmatic guide, filled with Katie’s own personal stories and journey, distills the concept of “self-talk” down to its core. The book provides a fresh and much-needed perspective on not only how to shift your negative self-talk at the deepest levels, but how to make that shift last in the face of real life.
In the episode today, we’re going to explore Katie’s personal journey which led her to this passion towards ‘women against negative self-talk’ and understand what inspired her to support others through creating her incredible resources, podcast and book. Katie discusses the difference between self-like versus self-love; things to do when you’re in an overwhelm storm and how we can truly change our negative talk to find a more compassionate, supportive and motivating inner voice.
I know that so many of you struggle with negative self-talk and this episode is going to inspire you with lots of wisdom, skills and strategies to shift this. I hope that you enjoy it.

Thursday Dec 14, 2023
Thursday Dec 14, 2023
A Bite Size episode.
I have had a flurry of requests this week around dealing with illness (flu, colds, coughs etc) and eating disorder recovery.
If you’re in recovery and then you get sick, you might have lost your sense of taste and smell. You might have lost your appetite or feel that you should have lost your appetite. Dealing with symptoms of cold/flu might make sticking to your meal plan even harder. The eating disorder might want to capitalise on the opportunity not to eat. This can conjure up lots of eating disorders thoughts and heaps of guilt and shame. You may have used past illness/sick periods as a ‘valid’ excuse not to eat and to focus on weight loss.
In this episode, I explore how to stay in your recovery lane when dealing with illness. I hope that you find it helpful.

A Deep Dive into Eating Disorders and Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, with Sarah Liz King
Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Today I’m talking to Sarah Liz King, who is an accomplished exercise physiologist who has dedicated her career to promoting safe and effective exercise practices, for individuals with eating disorders, exercise addiction, and hypothalamic amenorrhea.
Sarah's expertise and knowledge have been instrumental in supporting individuals with eating disorders to develop positive and sustainable exercise habits that support their recovery and overall health. She has worked extensively with clients in both inpatient and outpatient eating disorder treatment, helping to facilitate healthy relationships with exercise during recovery. She has also had her own healing journey in recovery from eating disorders and hypothalamic amenorrhea.
Today Sarah is going to do a deep dive into Hypothalamic Amenorrhea. It is a condition that affects many women with eating disorders but is not often understood or spoken about enough. She’s going to explore how eating disorders and hypothalamic amenorrhea are connected; the detrimental effects this can have on the body and most importantly, how to heal from hypothalamic amenorrhea.
I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

Challenging All or Nothing Thinking around Food at Christmas
Wednesday Dec 06, 2023
Wednesday Dec 06, 2023
A Bite Size episode!
It is incredibly common for people with eating disorders to struggle with 'all or nothing thinking' and particularly at Christmas This frequently leads to 'good phases' (in the weeks leading up to Christmas) and the contrasting, wholly chaotic and distressing 'bad phases' (between Christmas and New Year) and this approach doesn't support balanced mental and physical well-being.
In this episode, I talk about 'all or nothing thinking'. I discuss the ways that it can be so detrimental in recovery and explore how to take steps towards embracing the grey, along with greater contentment and peace, particularly at Christmas. I hope that you enjoy it.

One from the early days of the podcast. This is an additional bonus episode (you'll get 3 this week!) talking about chewing and spitting. Recently, I have received many requests for more information about this.
Please don't listen to this episode, if think it will be unhelpful for you. Chewing and spitting is a very damaging behaviour and not something to experiment with. It has detrimental costs to your physical and mental wellbeing.
However, if you do struggle with c and s, this might be an episode to help you feel less alone and to begin to make some changes.

Today I am talking to Lauren Marie Aron, who is a Highly Specialist Psychotherapist and Director and Founder of the Hope Space in Putney, London. The Hope Space is a sanctuary and safe space to support people with disordered eating through therapies.
Lauren’s passion lies in treating clients who struggle with a disordered relationship with food and body. Additionally, she has a strong interest in CBT-E (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders).
Lauren also integrates Transactional Analysis to explore how our interactions with others influence our experiences. Furthermore, she utilizes EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to address trauma and reprocess negative core beliefs that can impact your life.
In the episode today, Lauren is going to do a deep dive into bariatric surgery and eating disorders. This is an area that is not talked about enough, and we know that many people struggle with eating disorders before and after surgery.
Lauren discusses the prevalence of eating disorders among individuals considering or undergoing bariatric surgery. She delves into the necessary screening and assessment that is needed. Lauren explores the complex interplay between bariatric surgery and eating disorders, considering psychological, emotional and behavioural aspects.
