Diet Pills and Eating Disorders
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
In this episode, I explore the use of diet pills and eating disorders. It's a topic that is not talked about enough. I'm aware that many people may be struggling with a physical and mental dependency to these pills.
I explore the link between diet pills and eating disorders; how these pills are so easily accessible and 'normalised'; different types of pills and how to begin to come off them. Please do consult with your medical doctor before making any changes around diet pill usage. I hope that you find this helpful.

Although eating disorder recovery requires behaviour change and a focus on food, it also requires psychological and mindset work. If this part of recovery is not addressed, you are at risk of being stuck in a quasi-recovered place or simply thinking that 'recovery doesn't work for me'.
This is part five on all things psychology and mindset in eating disorder recovery. Many people with eating disorders consciously or unconsciously find that a focus on food and body can bring a sense of safety and control, when life has felt overwhelming and out of control. In this episode, I explore how this plays out and how you can begin to let go of control and surrender, not only with food but in relationships and wider life. I hope that you find it helpful.

Today I’m talking to Cindy Spratt, who's a holistic & functional nutritionist that specialises in eating disorder recovery. Cindy speaks about an all-encompassing approach that teaches fundamentals of nutrition, listening to the body, learning how to respect and love the body, and rebuilding a loving and joyful relationship with food, so that people can thrive long term and feel good about food and in their body.
Cindy has been on her own healing journey. As a young girl she loved being in the kitchen and creating and connecting through food. Her first job was at a local tea house, aged 11, and with a local catering company soon after.
Throughout her teenage years, however, Cindy’s relationship with food morphed into something different. She spent almost a decade as a competitive gymnast, where weight and body image were of heightened focus. When the time came to step away from gymnastics, the drastic drop in exercise, along with puberty and the complex mental/emotional challenges of adolescence, her once loving, and rather normal relationship with food, was replaced by something deeply dysfunctional.
From Cindy’s teens well into her twenties, her food journey became her biggest struggle. She found herself in the throes of bingeing and purging, starving, dieting, over-exercising, and popping pills. She describes the shame and guilt that engulfed her during those years as devastating, and the loneliness, unbearable.
In her mid-twenties, Cindy came to the realisation that her health was suffering, that there was more to her than an eating disorder, and more to this life than struggle. Determined to find a way to bring back her love of food and turn her life’s journey into something positive, she aligned herself to a new path and began to look to the health world for guidance.
And then…Cindy’s life was turned upside down
At 32, as a young wife and mother, and well on her way to being fully recovered from the eating disorder, doctors found a cancerous tumor in her colon. She endured a life altering colon resection and was advised to endure several rounds of chemo.
Opting out of chemo, Cindy set out to up her health game. She went back to school, turned to exercise for therapy, and opened up her spirit to life’s teachings.
What she found was a calling: to help others find their own positive food journey and to be the help she didn’t have when she was younger.
Since then, Cindy has spent years in school becoming a nutritional enthusiast, a kitchen muse, and a food and body advocate, receiving certifications in Holistic Nutrition, Functional Nutrition, Culinary Nutrition, Eating Psychology, and Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching. Her kitchen is now a joyful and creative space, once again. She has learned how to listen to her body, reuniting it with athleticism, dance, and the wondrous outdoors.
Cindy’s life story with food has taught her endless lessons: to embrace every moment with gratitude and compassion, to listen to life’s teachings, and that believing in oneself is half the battle. She hopes to pass this along to others.
In the episode today, Cindy explores her healing journey with food, and the ups and downs along this tumultuous path. She talks about getting started in recovery with nutrition and also shares some of her best tips for addressing psychology and a bigger picture of recovery. It's an inspiring episode and I hope that you enjoy it.

Using Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) in Eating Disorder Recovery, with Lisa Unger
Saturday Jan 20, 2024
Saturday Jan 20, 2024
Today I’m talking to Lisa Unger - an emotional and eating disorder specialist and a level 2, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practitioner.
Lisa has been on her own healing journey and spent years trapped in a cycle of bingeing and restrictive dieting, leading to self-loathing and unhappiness. She found a path to recovery by combining various techniques with her innate strength and resilience. Today, Lisa embraces all foods without restriction and is no longer ashamed of her body.
Using her skills in nutrition and psychology, Lisa now dedicates herself to empowering emotional eaters and those battling eating disorders to make long term changes to the way they think about food and themselves. With her support Lisa gives them the freedom to regain control of their lives.
Lisa has found EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to be a transformative tool for many of her clients in reducing anxiety and enhancing their overall well-being during their recovery journey. It is a technique that can be used in social settings as well which so many of her clients have found to be invaluable.
In the episode today, Lisa talks about her own healing journey and does a deep dive into EFT. What is it? How can we learn it? How can it help? Then, she explores the integration of EFT, as a strategy for managing anxiety and promoting healing in eating disorder recovery. Lisa brings some real practical examples of how to use EFT, showing how it can be such a valuable healing skill to add to your toolbox. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

Today I’m talking to Dr. David Wiss who became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in 2013 and founded Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice of RDNs specializing in treating eating disorders as well as substance use. He earned his Ph.D. in Public Health with a minor in Health Psychology from UCLA by investigating links between adverse childhood experiences and mental health outcomes among socially disadvantaged men. Dr. Wiss's newest venture is his app called Wise Mind Nutrition. Wise Mind Nutrition delivers educational content using nutrition and lifestyle medicine to improve mental health outcomes.
In the episode today, Dr. Wiss explores how adverse life experiences can impact your eating. He dives into his own approaches in treating clients with eating disorders and disordered eating, very much supporting each client as an individual and appreciating a nuanced approach. Dr. Wiss talks ‘all foods fit’ versus the abstinence model, noting how each model is imperfect but brings valuable thinking and tools. He reflects on how it is important to consider an individual’s needs, taking into consideration their personality type, genetics, addiction history and other mental health when addressing nutrition. Dr. Wiss then talks about his app – Wise Mind Nutrition. This is an app that can be used by people in eating disorder recovery but also the wider population. He emphasises relationship with food and getting away from tracking metrics that can be unhelpful, whilst empowering individuals to explore their own food relationship, rather than take on any fixed advice. This is an episode packed full of goodness and inspiration. I hope that you enjoy it.
